What are the different types of warts?

The word “wart” is used to describe many different types of skin lesions.

This discussion is limited to warts caused by Human Papilloma Virus, which are also known as viral warts.

Here are the different types of viral wart:

  • Common warts. There are warty lumps found around the nails, on the backs of the fingers and on the toes.
  • Periungual warts. These are common warts that occur around the nails. In some instances, warts can damage the way the nail grows.
  • Verrucas or Plantar warts. Verrucas or plantar warts are warts that develop on the soles of the feet. Verrucas can grow inwards and cause thickening of the skin, which leads to pain on walking. Verrucas can also spread outwards and multiply, causing a mosaic pattern.
  • Palmar wants. Palmar warts are warts that develop on the hands. They can occur anywhere on the palms, including the fingers and pulps.
  • Plane warts. Plane warts are flat-topped warts that occur on the face, backs of the hands or shins. On the face, they are more likely to spread with shaving.
  • Filiform warts. Fronds stick out from a base.

What are the treatments for viral warts?

  • Wait until they resolve.
  • At-home treatments with various acid based paints to break down warty tissue
  • Cryotherapy – regular freeze treatment. Success rates can be as low as 10% for warts on the feet and 50% for warts on the palms. The treatment is quite painful as well.

Understanding Resistant Warts

Resistant warts, also known as recalcitrant warts, are warts that do not respond to traditional treatment methods such as over-the-counter remedies, cryotherapy (freezing), or topical medications. These warts can be a source of frustration and embarrassment for individuals as they tend to persist for months or even years, leading to discomfort and diminished quality of life.

Bleomycin Wart treatment at Midland Skin (NB Currently waiting list only)

If you are struggling with warts that will not clear with wart paints and cryotherapy, or you do not want to undergo these lengthy and sometimes painful treatments, then a course of Bleomycin wart treatment is one to consider. Bleomycin treatment, a revolutionary approach offered by our clinic, has shown remarkable success in combating warts and verrucas.

What is Bleomycin?

Bleomycin, a chemotherapeutic agent primarily used in oncology, has been repurposed as an effective treatment for resistant warts. This medication acts by inhibiting the DNA synthesis process in the wart cells, leading to their destruction. Unlike other treatments, Bleomycin targets the specific wart tissue while sparing the surrounding healthy skin, making it a safe and precise treatment option. Because very small doses are required, and it is injected directly into the skin, there are no untoward effects on the body from this treatment.

The Procedure

The procedure for Bleomycin treatment of resistant warts is relatively simple and minimally invasive. It is performed by a qualified healthcare professional in our clinic. Here’s a step-by-step overview of the process:

Post-Treatment Care. After the procedure, the healthcare professional will provide instructions for post-treatment care. This may include keeping the area clean, avoiding excessive moisture, and applying a recommended ointment or dressing.

Consultation. During the initial consultation, the healthcare professional will examine the wart(s) and assess their suitability for Bleomycin treatment. They will also discuss the procedure, address any concerns, and answer questions.

Preparation. Before administering Bleomycin, the healthcare professional will clean the area surrounding the wart. Numbing creams and injections are not usually required but can be given if needed

Administration. Using a fine needle, Bleomycin is injected directly into the wart tissue. The medication starts working immediately to destroy the wart cells.

Benefits of Bleomycin Treatment

  1. High Success Rate: Bleomycin treatment has shown exceptional success in eliminating resistant warts. Studies have reported clearance rates of up to 80-90% after a course of treatments.
  2. Targeted Approach: Unlike other treatment options, Bleomycin specifically targets wart tissue, minimizing the risk of damage to healthy skin.
  3. Minimally Invasive: The procedure is relatively quick, requires no surgical incisions, and causes minimal discomfort. Most patients can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment.
  4. Versatile Application: Bleomycin can be used to treat warts on various body parts, including the hands, feet and periungual (nail) aeas.
  5. Time-Efficient: With Bleomycin treatment, patients can achieve wart clearance more rapidly compared to traditional methods, providing relief from the emotional and physical burden of persistent warts.
