What is atopic eczema?

Atopic eczema is one of the most common skin disorders in the UK. While it is often a problem during childhood, it can frequently persist into adult life.

Atopic Eczema

  • Atopic eczema is intensely itchy and can interfere with school, work, sleep, relationships and social activities.
  • Sufferers often have food allergies, asthma or hay fever too
  • The primary cause for atopic eczema is a breakdown in the skin barrier. This occurs because of a genetic tendency which explains why atopic eczema runs in families
  • Soaps and other irritants can damage the skin barrier further
  • Treatment may be topical (creams), light based or tablet based

The dermatologists at Midland Skin Institute are able to consult adults and teenagers with troublesome atopic eczema. Find out more here.
