Specialist skin surgery and laser consultation
A specialist skin surgery consultation is an appointment with a specialist where any skin lesions such as lump, bumps, irregularities on the skin or skin growths, can be assessed. The assessment allows you to discuss with your doctor what the diagnosis may be and what the options for treatment might be such as:
- A surgical procedure under local anaesthetic
- A laser procedure
- A non-surgical procedure
- A prescription treatment
- No treatment

Surgical and laser procedures consultation
Assessment by an expert is required to determine if a surgical procedure is suitable. A consultation is required before any procedure is undertaken. The following are discussed at a skin surgery consultation:
- What is the diagnosis and is a procedure suitable?
- What kind of surgical or laser procedure is required?
- What will the healing be like?
- What will the scar be like?
- Will more than one procedure be required?
- Will further tests or assessments be required? Such as a scan or biopsy.
- The impact of any possible histological findings.
- How to manage medications such as blood thinning medications, travel, work, and other issues before and after the procedure.
When considering any procedure, your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits as they apply to your individual circumstances.
Types of problems where a specialist skin surgery and laser consultation is required
A skin surgery consultation is carried out before the following procedures:
- Laser treatment of a skin lesion or skin concern
- Seborrhoeic keratosis removal
- Mole removal
- Cyst removal
- Lipoma removal
- Skin biopsy
- Alopecia/scalp biopsy
- Skin cancer excision
- Skin cancer excision plus flap or skin graft
- Mohs surgery for skin cancer
- Other skin lesion removal with or without stitches
Benefits of a skin surgery or laser procedure
- The likelihood of complete removal or cure from laser or surgery
- The likelihood of any symptoms resolving
- Cosmetic improvement
Risks of a skin surgery or laser procedure
It is always important to be aware of any risks of a procedure and take these into account when making a decision to have surgery. The doctor will be able to go through any risks that may apply to you. Some examples include:
- Scar formation – a surgical procedure will usually leave some form of scar, and at the consultation, it is possible to discuss the likely length and orientation of any scars
- Discomfort – there can be discomfort after some procedures
- Healing period and down time – you will need to consider healing time and how it may affect your ability to work, travel, drive etc
- Bleeding – there is a risk of bleeding from a wound, especially in the first 48 hours. The risk of bleeding may be increased for some people who may need to take extra precautions.
- Infection – there is a risk of infection following any surgical procedure in the first week. The risk of infection is increased with certain risk factors such as diabetes and immunosuppression.
- Delayed healing – some people may suffer from slow healing.
- Keloid and raised scars – some people are prone to elevated scars which may need additional separate treatment.
- Numbness and nerve damage can also occur
Time for rest and recuperation
The surgery consultation is also a good time to discuss the time that may be required for rest and recuperation. For example, you need to plan time off work or from heavy physical activity for a period. You may need to plan to have help for a period of time.
Timing of surgery or laser treatment
It is important to consider when the best time might be to have a surgical procedure. A gap between the consultation and procedure gives additional time for reflection and a ‘cooling off’ period in case you decide against having the procedure.
Limitations
We try to help as many concerns as possible, but at all stages, we have to be realistic and ask you to be the same. We need to assess you in order to provide you with relevant advice regarding a skin surgical or laser procedure.
We only offer medical advice relating to procedures at a booked consultation.
There will be instances where strong evidence for treatments does not exist, or our clinic does not offer a form of treatment you require, or can not help you for other reasons – you will be advised of this at your consultation, and if possible, we will let you know of other providers who may be able to assist you.
If it is clear from your enquiry that we cannot assist you, then we will let you know this.
It is not possible for us to predict which treatment may be suitable for you, or indeed if none of our treatments are suitable for you, without being assessed at a consultation, where your concern can be evaluated.
We also offer no guarantee that a particular procedure or laser treatment will be offered following a consultation.
If you are not sure whether a private dermatology consultation is for you, then we ask you to speak with your GP, who may be able to guide you and refer you accordingly.
I have already had a consultation at another clinic or my GP, and I know what I require – do I still require a consultation with you?
The process of a clinical consultation is crucial to patient safety and outcomes, especially in the context of a procedure. Consequently, a consultation is required with us in all circumstances for patients seeking procedures with us. You are most welcome to bring correspondences from other clinics with you to your consultation.
