Follow-Up Appointments
The majority of our patients require one or more follow-up consultations. These appointments are an important part of your ongoing care. They allow your doctor to monitor your progress, assess your response to a procedure or treatment, review any results, and plan further management if needed.
A follow-up consultation relates to the issues discussed at your initial visit, but also covers any changes in your condition or concerns that arise afterwards. It is also required if you need to continue prescription medication.
Follow-up appointments may be needed shortly after your first visit—sometimes within a week—or several weeks or months later, depending on your condition. If your skin or hair concern is particularly active, you may require regular reviews (e.g. fortnightly).
You will be invited to make a follow-up appointment at a convenient time. As the clinic can be busy, we recommend booking early.
The current fee for follow-up consultations is available here.
When will I require a follow-up consultation?
Many conditions evolve over time, and one appointment may not be enough to reach a diagnosis or deliver effective treatment. You may need one or more follow-up consultations for the following reasons:
1. Treatment Monitoring and Prescription Renewal
- You have been prescribed medication that needs monitoring for response or side effects.
- Your medication needs adjustment or dose changes, as responses vary between individuals.
- Prescription renewals can only be issued during follow-up consultations.
- Blood tests required for monitoring certain medications are reviewed during follow-up.
2. Ongoing or Changing Skin or Hair Conditions
- Your condition is still being assessed and a diagnosis has not yet been confirmed.
- Your condition is not improving or has worsened despite treatment.
- Your skin or hair concern has flared, changed, fluctuated or recurred.
- Your condition is ongoing and requires periodic review.
3. Further Discussion or Support
- You would like to go over your condition or treatment plan again.
- You have further questions or would like more support.
- You wish to discuss other treatment options or recommendations made by another practitioner.
4. Results and Procedure Planning
- You need to go through results of blood tests, scans or biopsy samples.
- You are planning a procedure (e.g. biopsy, excision or laser) and need to discuss the next steps.
- You are recovering from a procedure and need a medical review. (Note: simple wound checks by our nurse assistant are included in your procedure fee.)
5. Urgent Situations
- You have experienced a side effect or reaction to treatment that needs urgent assessment.
6. After a surgical or laser procedure
- A follow-up consultation is an inherent component of your surgical or laser procedure. See below for more details.
As a general guide, “new” things require a further appointment. For example, if you have “new” blood test results (that were not presented to the doctor at your last appointment), have new queries or points to discuss, have new changes or want to try a “new” treatment – then a new appointment is required.
How soon will I need to come back?
Follow-up may be required:
- Within 1–2 weeks if you’ve recently had a procedure or started new treatment
- After a few weeks or months, depending on your progress and treatment plan
- Regularly, such as weekly or fortnightly, if your condition is active and needs close monitoring
If over 12 months have passed since your last appointment, you will be asked to book a new initial consultation.
If you feel you’ll need more time at your next visit, please ask for an extended follow-up consultation.
Why is follow-up important after a surgical or laser procedure?
A follow-up consultation is considered part of the treatment plan and part of the therapeutic process. We organise follow-up appointments after all procedures to:
- Confirm that healing is progressing as expected
- Address any concerns such as scarring, asymmetry, or recurrence
- Review results and discuss the next steps
- Provide personalised aftercare
This supports our duty of care and is in line with GMC guidance on holistic patient care and outcome monitoring.
Can I have a video or telephone consultation?
Yes, in appropriate cases we offer video or telephone consultations instead of face-to-face reviews. Please let us know if you would prefer this when booking.
Can I have an email consultation?
We do not offer email consultations or give clinical advice by email. If you have further questions or concerns after your appointment, a follow-up consultation is required. This is important for safety, proper documentation, and to meet our professional obligations.
Can I see my GP instead?
Yes, and we encourage this if needed. We send a copy of all clinical correspondence to your GP—if you’ve given us permission and provided accurate contact details—so they can update your NHS records.
Is there a charge for a follow-up consultation?
Yes. Each appointment is for a single session of care, so it is important to factor in potential further sessions regarding time and costs.
If you need further advice, review or treatment, one or more follow-up consultations will be required and charged at the prevailing rate.
You can find current prices on our fees and terms page.
How do I make a follow-up appointment?
You can book by calling the practice or emailing us. If your preferred time is not available, we can add you to a cancellation list and contact you if an earlier slot opens up.
I don’t wish to continue with private care—can I transfer to the NHS?
We are a private clinic and cannot transfer your care to the NHS or provide advice on NHS services or waiting times.
If you wish to continue care within the NHS, you should speak to your GP, who may be able to refer you within local guidelines.
You can read more about how private treatment may affect your NHS care here.
Emotional difficulties following a diagnosis or consultation
If you are experiencing emotional difficulties following your consultation, we can recommend a Psychologist to offer you assessment and support. Being referred to a psychologist is common when experiencing physical health difficulties. Please let us know if you would like contact details.
